Fact is, some of the best and most successful people do NOT make the best or most successful politicians. Unfortunately, Lawyer Darboe's timidity and unreserved humility as a human being, did not help him as a Gambian politician
Anybody else in his position and capacity, especially in developed world, would have taken great advantage of their intent and accomplishments to illuminate, catapult them further. Like constantly trumpeting his strengths to gain political capital. Or his children piggybacking and wearing his success and outstanding moral perfection as a badge. Obama and Western politicians do it. Their families and friends are all over the place promoting them and their uniqueness, to the point of over embellishment.
(Most) Gambians do not know Ousainou Darboe, his background or motivation. His drive and ability. This decent man dedicated his life and career to the service of nation and humanity, especially the poor and under-privileged. All that comes at a cost, a hefty one I'm sure he's has no regrets about. He's lost it all. From career, wealth, relationships, and lives (in friends, supporters and loved ones) in the process since 1996.
We can have all our political differences with Darboe but he's honorable, dignified and outstanding human being of impeccable character. It's OK to disagree with his political views. It's OK to criticize his policies and position as a politician. BUT as a man and citizen he is humanly second to none.
Ousainou Darboe and his people did what my father wasn't able to do even if he'd tried. He's a better Gambian, patriot than my father. And quite possibly many of yours too. Therefore, I've vowed, to honor and defend these men and their sacrifices. In prison or outside. And because of that, I'm willing and ready to go beyond bounds to match anybody with anything, at any level (of extreme disrespect), if they're dishonored, disrespected or ridiculed. And that's ANYBODY.
These people are going to serve their times with honor with no regrets. And God willing, some of us are eternally indebted.
FREE DARBOE AND THE UNITED DEMOCRATIC PARTY EXECUTIVE.
