NIGERIA CELEBRATES. AFRICA AND DEMOCRACY WIN.
"Nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else", Jonathan sermons.
This is a rarity. A hard-to-come-by in African politics, that a sitting president would lose after one term. What's even a milestone is for an incumbent to accept defeat and concede graciously. Jonathan Goodluck's official address to the nation after the INEC declared the APC and Buhari winners, is inspiring. http://africanspotlight.com/2015/03/31/nigeriadecides-statement-by-president-jonathan-on-2015-presidential-election/. Nigeria the nation won, but president Jonathan Goodluck scoop the medallion for being a true, contented democrat! He's perfected his shortcomings!
Jonathan with all his weaknesses, deserves commendation knowing what power-drunken African leaders are capable of. They'd kill a whole town if that's what would keep them in the seat. They'd seal their families and let loose the dogs in uniform to wreck havoc on the people who are only guilty of speaking with their votes.
So I hope the rest of Africa learn that presidency shouldn't be a paternal inheritance but rather a citizens' mandate that they're entrusted with. Serve and quit on the people's accord to avoid unnecessary blood shed.
President-elect Muhammadu Buhari! Your Excellency, best believe that your second coming could be a baptism of fire! Too much is expected of you from a very impatient and demanding young generation. You're not expected to chuck the honey jug in an unreasonable time but lord! you better brace up!
Nigerians have faith in you and have known you to be a tough disciplinarian who was a macho man, with the ability to curb corruption but especially cut out to tackle the national security threat possed by Boko Haram terror group. This is one of the weaknesses of you're predecessor that got you the mandate. Tough as it is, you must deliver!
One of the many daunting tasks is how President Buhari maneuvers and operate as a civilian President of Africa's most populous nation. In the 80s, General Buhari was spoiled with the military decrees that were never challenged in the courts or the streets. They were drastic, repressive and draconian. This time, civilian president Buhari's legal instrument would be the Constitution! That could be a restriction. No carte blanche! This sure isn't going to be fufu and okra soup! Might be a mild bitter kola! :)
My sincere congratulations to NIGERIANS, THE SECURITY FORCES, PRESIDENT GOODLUCK AND PRESIDENT-ELECT BUHARI! The ultimate winners in this are Africa and Democracy! Nigeria is a big brother and they're expected to set precedence. They've done just that! I hope all countries in Africa including my beloved Gambia, follow suit.
Following the peaceful political transition in Senegal a couple of years ago, and Nigeria today, there's a glimpse of hope that beating the incumbent at the polls is doable in Africa too even with all the advantages of incumbency. All that's needed is a fairly leveled playing field.
I hope the Gambia catches that sinus soon. It's doable, but not without a United Front. So let's get to work!
Good Morning And Peace To The Planet!
Saidykhan.
